The name is ancient. The event is new.

One indoor venue, taken over completely and rebuilt as a single world.

Nothing is announced until it is real, contracted, and worth the name.

Three seals hold. Each one breaks here first, on the day the thing beneath it is signed.

IThe questionAnswered when every seal is broken

Latin. Shall I proceed?

Roman writers traced the name of the Agonalia to a question. In Ovid’s account the attendant at the altar, knife already drawn, always asks whether he is to act, and never acts unless he is told to.

That is the whole posture of this project. A festival is a promise made in public, and most are made long before anyone has the right to make them. Agonalia keeps the question attached to the name. Nothing goes out until the answer is yes.

Which is why this page is short. It is a working document, not a poster. Everything on it is either true today or marked as missing.

A heap of cinnabar pigment on black basalt with a single straight line cut through it.
Plate 01Cinnabar on basalt. The line is drawn. Nothing is struck.

IIThe roomConcept, not a venue plan

One building.
One world.

Take a single indoor building and treat every part of it, the way in, the walls, the air above the crowd, as part of the same show. That is the entire concept. Everything below is how it is held to.

  1. I

    The arena

One indoor venue taken over completely and rebuilt as a single world. Not a field, not a campsite, not a row of unrelated stages sharing a car park.

  2. II

    The threshold

The room has to change the second you cross into it. Entrance, corridor and sightline are treated as part of the show, not as the walk before it.

  3. III

    The spectacle

Roman scale without the museum dust. Light, sound and motion built at monument size, for a crowd that came to be inside something, not to watch it happen.

The passage

Nine stations, from the street to the far wall.

01 / 09Street

01Outside. Ordinary, and loud in the wrong way.

Conceptual. Not a venue plan. Abstract units; no dimension on this drawing is contracted.

A narrow passage between towering walls of black stone, converging on a distant slit of red light.
Plate 02The passage, as a concept. No room has been contracted or built.

IIIThe sealsOne of four broken

Four seals.
One broken.

This is the whole announcement schedule. Each seal covers one fact, and it breaks only when the thing beneath it is signed. Press the sealed ones. They do not open early.

Agonalia

The name is settled. Agonalia is the standard the rest of the work has to earn. Nothing beyond the name has been announced, and nothing beyond it is being implied.

Cinnabar, settled. Graphite, not settled.

IVThe standardBuilt in public

Built in public.
Nothing invented.

Tradition is not inherited. It is built in public, and that only works if every word on the page can be trusted. So here is the rule this site is held to, in both directions.

What will appearWhen true

  1. 01The venue, when it is contracted.
  2. 02The date, when it is locked and insured.
  3. 03Artists, one at a time, as each contract is signed.
  4. 04Tickets, when there is a real on-sale to point at.

What will never appearNot ever

  1. 01An unsigned lineup.
  2. 02A countdown to a date that does not exist.
  3. 03A photograph pretending to show a room that has not been built.
  4. 04Capacity, budget, attendance, or any figure that cannot be substantiated.

Every image on this page is conceptual and says so on the plate. Every fact on this page is contracted or marked as missing.

InquiriesThe one open door

Press and
partnerships.

The gates are shut to the public until the seals break. They are open to the people who build rooms like this one: press, venues, production, brands, sponsors and artist representation. Write with specifics.

Every field marked with a rule is required. Nothing here is a mailing list: an inquiry is read, answered if it warrants it, and handled privately.

What you are proposing, for whom, and on what timeline. Specifics travel further than pitches.
